Cattle Dog is a label more than a single breed. Most dogs listed this way are Australian Cattle Dogs, also called Blue or Red Heelers, or mixes with one, though it can also cover Texas Heelers and crosses with Border Collies, Labs and others. The Australian Cattle Dog was developed in nineteenth-century Australia to move cattle by nipping at their heels.
Most are medium-sized and muscular at roughly 30 to 50 pounds, with a short double coat that sheds moderately. They bond tightly with their people, stay wary of strangers and want a job to do. In Fort Lauderdale that job might be a daily run, a training session or a puzzle toy while afternoon storms pass. Mixes vary in size, coat and energy, so a dog's day-to-day behavior tells you more than the label.
