Border Collies were developed by shepherds along the Anglo-Scottish border to gather sheep with speed, focus and very little instruction. A dog named Old Hemp, born in Northumberland in 1893, set the quiet, intense working style the breed still shows. They're medium-sized, usually 30 to 55 pounds, with rough or smooth double coats, most often black and white but found in many other colors.
Many are quick, eager learners that bond closely with their people, and that brainpower needs an outlet. In Fort Lauderdale, that might be trick training, scent games or agility, because a bored Border Collie may invent jobs like herding kids or chasing cars. The double coat sheds moderately, with heavier seasonal bursts, so regular brushing pays off in the humidity.
