The Dachshund was developed in Germany to follow badgers underground, which explains the long body, short legs, deep chest and big voice. There are two AKC sizes, standard and miniature, and three coats: smooth, longhaired and wirehaired. In Boca Raton's warm climate, smooth and wirehaired coats are often the easiest to keep comfortable, while a longhaired dog needs more brushing in the humidity.
Many Dachshunds are curious, brave and devoted, with a stubborn streak and a love of digging and chasing. Scent trails pull them along, so a leash matters in a city with lakes and canals. Their body shape brings the breed's biggest health risk, intervertebral disc disease, so a lean build and limited jumping matter for life. Dachshunds vary, and house-training can take patience.
