Terrier is a type of dog rather than a single breed. The name comes from the Latin word for earth, because these dogs were developed over several centuries to go after rats and foxes underground. About 30 breeds carry the label, and adoption listings also use it for small to medium mixes whose ancestry is a guess.
Most adoptable terriers weigh 10 to 35 pounds and have wiry or smooth coats. They're usually loyal, affectionate and confident, with habits like barking, digging and chasing small animals. Those habits show up in New Castle in a few ways: squirrels in the historic district, wildlife along the marsh edges, and thin walls in the rowhouses. Size and energy vary a lot, so meeting the dog tells you more than the label.
