The Bedlington Terrier comes from the mining country around Bedlington, Northumberland, in England, where miners and others valued it for killing vermin and running down rabbits. Its pear-shaped head, woolly topknot and arched back give it a lamb-like look, but the body underneath is lean and fast, and Whippet ancestry likely explains its speed.
Most Bedlingtons are gentle and affectionate at home, then burst into action at the sight of a squirrel. The crisp, curly coat sheds very little but needs regular brushing and professional clipping. The breed also carries an inherited liver condition, copper toxicosis, so a veterinarian's guidance on diet and liver health matters. Dogs vary, and a Bedlington's own personality counts for more than the breed description.
