Shepherd is a label for a type of dog rather than a single breed. On adoption listings it most often means a German Shepherd or German Shepherd mix, but it can also describe Australian Shepherds, Belgian and Dutch Shepherds, English Shepherds and crosses with Labs, Huskies and many other dogs. What links them is ancestry in herding and flock-guarding work, where dogs moved, gathered and protected livestock for shepherds.
Most Shepherd-type dogs adopters meet are medium to large, athletic and smart, with a thick shedding coat and a strong desire to stay close to their people. Many are loyal, watchful and quick to learn, and some are reserved or protective with strangers. They generally need daily exercise, training and a job to focus on. Because ancestry varies, the individual dog's history and foster notes tell you more than the label.
