The Standard Poodle is the largest of the three Poodle sizes and the closest to the breed's original job as a water retriever. Under the elaborate clips is a square, athletic dog with a long muzzle, dark oval eyes and a dense, curly coat in solid colors from black and white to apricot, silver and cafe-au-lait. Adults usually weigh 40 to 70 pounds.
Standards are often described as clever, sensitive and quietly dignified, with a playful streak that lasts well into adulthood. They bond closely with their people and learn quickly, which suits households that enjoy training. The low-shedding coat never stops growing, so expect professional grooming every month or two plus regular brushing at home. Temperament varies from dog to dog, and age and past experience matter as much as breed.
