Dutch Shepherds began as all-purpose farm dogs in the Netherlands, herding sheep, keeping flocks out of crops and watching over farmyards. Since 1914 the breed has been defined by its brindle coat in gold or silver tones, in short-, long- or rough-haired varieties. Today it's best known as a police, military and sport dog, and it remains rare, sitting in the AKC's Miscellaneous Class.
Many are loyal, alert and eager to work, with an independent streak from their farm roots. They tend to be watchful with strangers and need early socialization. In Santa Rosa, that means plenty of calm exposure to downtown sidewalks and busy parks. Most need vigorous exercise, real mental work and consistent, reward-based training, so they suit experienced, active adopters who enjoy training as a hobby.
