The Standard Poodle is the largest of the three Poodle sizes and was developed as a water retriever, which explains the dense, curly coat and the love of swimming. Under the show clips is a square, athletic dog, usually 40 to 70 pounds, with a long muzzle and dark oval eyes. Standards are quick learners, often reserved with strangers and sensitive to harsh handling, though every dog varies.
Poodles shed very little, but the coat keeps growing, so plan on professional grooming every six to eight weeks plus brushing several times a week. In Santa Barbara, a dog that splashes at the beach or hikes foothill trails needs extra rinsing and combing to keep curls from matting. Many Standards also enjoy tricks, scent games and training as much as a good run.
