The Cairn Terrier comes from the Scottish Highlands and the Isle of Skye, where farmers used these short-legged dogs to bolt foxes and vermin out of cairns, the rock piles that dot the countryside. The result is a sturdy dog with a broad, foxy face, small upright ears and a harsh, weather-resistant double coat in wheaten, red, gray, brindle or near-black, but never white.
Cairns are cheerful, curious and confident, friendly with most people yet independent enough to ignore a request they find dull. Expect digging, a strong urge to chase small animals and barking when bored. In Santa Barbara, a leash and a secure fence matter most. The coat sheds little and needs weekly brushing plus periodic stripping, and dogs of the breed vary in how these traits show up.
