American Staffordshire Terriers descend from bull-and-terrier dogs that came to the United States from Britain in the 1800s, and the AKC first recognized the breed in 1936. They're stocky, muscular, medium-sized dogs, usually 40 to 70 pounds, with a broad head, pronounced cheeks and a short, glossy coat in almost any color.
Many AmStaffs are confident, goofy and devoted to their families. Their strength and enthusiasm call for training, leash manners and early socialization, and some are selective with other dogs no matter how they're raised. That matters on a walk through Santa Barbara's busy parks and sidewalks. The breed is also often grouped with pit bull types, so housing and insurance deserve a close look. AmStaffs are common in shelters and often overlooked.
