The Standard Poodle is the largest of the three AKC Poodle varieties and began as a water retriever, probably in Germany. Under the show-ring clips is a square, athletic dog, usually 18 to 24 inches tall and 40 to 70 pounds, with a dense, curly coat in solid colors. It sheds very little, though no dog is truly hypoallergenic.
Standards are clever, sensitive and people-focused, often reserved with strangers and playful well into adulthood. In San Jose, that suits households that enjoy training and shared outings, from creek-trail walks to a game of fetch at a dog park. The coat keeps growing, so expect brushing several times a week and a professional clip every four to eight weeks. Dogs vary, so look at the dog in front of you rather than the breed label.
