French Bulldogs trace back to small English Bulldogs that lace workers took to France in the 1800s, where they were crossed with local dogs and became Parisian favorites. Americans later set the upright bat ears in the breed standard. A Frenchie is compact and muscular, usually 16 to 28 pounds, with a big square head, loose wrinkled skin and a short, smooth coat in brindle, fawn, cream or white patterns.
Many are playful, affectionate and adaptable, and most bark relatively little, which suits San Jose's shared-wall housing. The flat face brings breathing, heat, skin and spine problems, so daily care leans on cool rooms and regular vet visits. Dogs labeled French Bulldog can be mixes, since looks alone can't confirm ancestry, so get to know the dog in front of you.
