Foxhound is really two breeds. The American Foxhound is a lighter, rangier hound developed in Maryland and Virginia, while the English Foxhound is heavier-boned, with roots in British hunts. Both are scent hounds bred to follow a trail for hours, with a short, hard coat, long ears and a deep chest built for stamina.
Many Foxhounds are sweet, easygoing and comfortable with other dogs, though each dog differs. They're also independent, nose-driven and loud, with a bay that carries. Some arrive from hunting packs having never lived indoors, so expect to teach house manners patiently. In San Diego, where dogs must be leashed on City park trails, that scent drive makes a fenced yard and long sniff walks the daily routine.
