English Pointers, listed by the AKC simply as Pointers, were developed in England as fast, wide-ranging bird dogs that find game by scent and then freeze, nose forward and often one foreleg raised. The result is a lean, muscular dog with a long head, soft hanging ears and a short, smooth coat, usually white with liver, lemon, orange or black markings. Adults generally weigh 45 to 75 pounds.
That background shapes daily life in San Diego. Many Pointers are mild and affectionate at home yet more independent than other gundogs, and young dogs can have remarkable stamina and a strong urge to follow a scent. Secure fencing, a soft bed indoors and a reliable leash routine matter, because a Pointer that catches a scent may ignore your calls. Dogs vary, so spend time with the one you're considering.
