Pugs began as companions at the Chinese imperial court and reached Europe through Dutch traders in the sixteenth century, later becoming favorites of European royalty. The modern Pug is a square, sturdy little dog, usually 14 to 18 pounds, with deep facial wrinkles, big dark eyes and a tail curled over the hip, in fawn or black. Many are even-tempered, funny and happiest near their people.
That charm comes with care needs. The flat face makes breathing harder, so heat, hard exercise and extra weight are real risks, and the short coat sheds heavily. Skin folds and prominent eyes need regular attention. In Sacramento, that means planning around hot summers and keeping a Pug lean. Reported lifespans vary, from about 11 to 15 years.
