The Pekingese was a palace companion in China for more than a thousand years, and its name comes from Peking, now Beijing. It's a compact toy dog, usually 7 to 14 pounds, with short legs, a broad flat face and a long double coat that forms a mane around the neck. Colors run from gold and red to cream, sable and black.
Many Pekes bond closely with one or two people, stay calm indoors and have an independent streak that turns training into a test of patience. They don't love rough handling, so quieter homes tend to suit them. In Sacramento, the flat face and thick coat matter most: plan on a cool indoor space through the long dry summer, regular brushing, and a veterinary look at breathing and eye health after adoption.
