The Boston Terrier was developed in Boston around 1870 from bulldog and terrier crosses and was among the first American breeds recognized by the AKC, in 1893. Its tuxedo-like markings earned it the nickname American Gentleman. Today's dog is compact, with large round eyes, upright ears and a smooth coat in black, brindle or seal with white.
Many Bostons are friendly, lively and affectionate, happy to play one minute and burrow under a blanket the next. Their size suits Sacramento's bungalows and apartments, and they tend to get along with people of all ages. The short muzzle brings trade-offs, including heat sensitivity, snoring and breathing problems, and the prominent eyes injure easily, so plan on careful summer care and regular vet visits. Each dog varies.
