The Beauceron is France's largest native herding dog, developed on the Beauce plains around Chartres to move and guard big flocks over long distances. Adults typically weigh 70 to 110 pounds and stand 24 to 28 inches tall, with a short, dense black-and-tan or harlequin coat, tan markings on the legs and the breed's signature double dewclaws on each hind leg.
Beaucerons are usually intelligent, confident and loyal, and reserved with strangers. Many are sensitive to tone and bond closely with one or two people. They mature slowly, often not settling until about age three, so expect a long adolescence. In Sacramento, that means time for daily exercise, steady socialization on busy sidewalks and calm, reward-based training. Dogs vary, so each Beauceron's own personality matters more than the breed description.
