The Parson Russell Terrier takes its name from the Reverend John Russell, a nineteenth-century hunting parson in Devon, England, who wanted a mostly white terrier with legs long enough to keep up with foxhounds. Parsons stand about 13 to 14 inches tall and weigh roughly 13 to 17 pounds, with a smooth or broken coat that is mostly white with black or tan markings. Shedding is moderate, and the coat needs little beyond brushing.
Many Parsons are bold, friendly and affectionate at home, with energy that seems to have no off switch. They tend to dig, chase and bark when bored, and some are scrappy with other dogs, though dogs of the breed vary. That suits Riverside adopters who enjoy training, can offer daily exercise and a secure fence, and have time for mental games.
