Named for the German words for badger and dog, the Dachshund was built to follow quarry underground, which explains the long body, short legs, deep chest and oversized bark. There are two AKC sizes, standard and miniature, and three coats: smooth, longhaired and wirehaired. Shedding is moderate, and wirehaired coats need occasional stripping.
Many Dachshunds are curious, brave and devoted to their people, with a stubborn streak and a strong urge to dig and chase. In Riverside, that means a secure yard, or a leash on trails where a good scent can pull them off course. Their shape brings one major health concern, intervertebral disc disease, so a lean body and limited jumping matter for life. House-training can take patience, but plenty of adopters find the personality worth it.
