The Basenji is a small hunting dog from the forests of Central Africa, especially the Congo basin, where village hunters used it to track small game and drive it into nets. It doesn't bark. Instead it yodels, howls and makes a sound called a baroo. The coat is short and fine, in chestnut red, black, tricolor or brindle, always with white feet, chest and tail tip.
Basenjis weigh about 20 to 26 pounds and groom themselves much like cats. They tend to be affectionate at home, reserved with strangers and independent about training. A strong chase drive, a talent for escaping and a love of chewing mean a Basenji in Riverside needs secure fencing, daily exercise and patience, though each dog varies in how strongly these traits show.
