A Chug is a cross between a Chihuahua and a Pug, a designer mix that took off in the United States in the 1990s. Because it is not a standardized breed, Chugs vary widely: some have the Pug's flat face, wrinkles and curled tail, while others have a longer Chihuahua muzzle and big upright ears. Most weigh 10 to 20 pounds and have a short coat in fawn, black, brown or brindle, often with a dark mask.
Many Chugs are affectionate, playful and talkative, blending the Pug's love of people with the Chihuahua's alert, opinionated streak. They usually want to be close to their family and may bark at strangers. Adopters should be ready for shedding, careful weight control, face-fold and dental care, and the breathing and heat sensitivity that a short muzzle can bring.
