A yellow Lab is a Labrador Retriever with a recessive coat color that runs from pale cream to fox red. Labs descend from Newfoundland water dogs and were developed in Britain as gun dogs, which explains the thick, water-shedding coat, the otter tail and the love of retrieving. Cream coats show dirt less than dark ones but shed just as heavily.
In Oceanside, that retrieving drive needs a legal outlet, since the beaches are closed to dogs. Long river-trail walks, fetch in a yard and puzzle toys work well. Expect year-round shedding, a steady appetite and a bouncy adolescence that can last two or three years. Field-bred Labs are often more intense than show-bred ones, and each dog's history and training say more than its color.
