The Standard Poodle is the largest of the three Poodle varieties and began as a water retriever, probably in Germany, long before the show clip took over. Under the coat is a square, athletic dog, usually 40 to 70 pounds, with dense curls in solid colors. It's one of the most trainable breeds around, and it tends to be sensitive, affectionate and a little reserved with strangers.
That heritage shows up in Oceanside in a few ways. City beaches are closed to dogs, so a Standard that loves water needs other outlets, like fetch games and long trail walks. The low-shedding coat keeps growing, so grooming is a standing appointment every six to eight weeks, plus brushing at home several times a week. Dogs vary, so spend time with a Standard before deciding.
