Boxers trace back to late-1800s Germany, where the Bullenbeisser, a hunting dog, was crossed with English Bulldogs. The result is a square, muscular working dog with a short shiny coat in fawn or brindle, often with white markings and a black mask. Appearance alone doesn't prove a dog is a Boxer, and many dogs labeled Boxers are mixes.
Most Boxers are clownish, affectionate and physical, greeting people with wiggles and leaps, and they stay puppyish for years. In a city like Oakland that means planning for daily exercise, reward-based training and supervision around small children who could get bowled over. Their short face and thin coat make them sensitive to heat and cold, and the breed carries real heart and cancer risks worth discussing with a veterinarian.
