Anatolian Shepherds are livestock guardians from the high plateau of central Turkey, where dogs of this type have protected sheep and goats from wolves for a very long time. They live alongside the flock and decide for themselves when to step in. Adults are big and rangy, with males often 110 to 150 pounds, and most wear a short to medium fawn coat with a dark mask.
At home, Anatolians tend to be calm, observant and loyal, but the guarding instinct stays strong. Many are wary of strangers, protective of their territory and inclined to roam if the fence allows. They mature slowly, think independently and respond poorly to harsh handling. In Modesto, that means secure fencing, patient socialization and a plan for summer heat.
