Golden Retrievers were developed in the Scottish Highlands in the late 1800s as gun dogs that could retrieve birds gently over rough ground and cold water. That history explains the dense, water-repellent double coat, the feathered legs and the love of fetch and swimming. In a coastal city like Long Beach, many Goldens light up at the sight of water.
Many Goldens are warm, patient and eager to please, and the breed works as guide, therapy and assistance dogs. They mature slowly, often staying exuberant and mouthy for two or three years, and they shed heavily, so expect regular brushing. The breed's higher-than-average cancer risk is worth understanding before adopting. Adult and senior Goldens are calmer and often fit quieter households well.
