Cattle Dog is a catch-all label. In shelters it usually means an Australian Cattle Dog, the Blue or Red Heeler, or a mix with one, though it can also cover Texas Heelers and crosses with Border Collies, Labs and others. The Australian Cattle Dog was developed in nineteenth-century Australia, where collie-type herders were crossed with dingoes to produce a tough drover that moves cattle by nipping at their heels.
Most are medium-sized, muscular and short-coated, weighing roughly 30 to 50 pounds, with a double coat that sheds moderately. They bond closely with their people, can be wary of strangers and like having a job. In Long Beach, that job can be a daily lap around a park, a game of fetch or a training session. Mixes vary in size, coat and energy.
