Siberian Huskies come from the Chukchi people of northeastern Siberia, who kept them as sled and family dogs. They reached Alaska in the early 1900s and became famous through the 1925 serum run to Nome. Medium-sized at 35 to 60 pounds, they have a thick double coat, erect ears, a brush tail and eyes that can be brown, blue or one of each.
Many Huskies are friendly and playful with nearly everyone, which makes them poor watchdogs. They also howl, dig and wander if a gate is left open, and a strong prey drive can be hard on cats and small pets. In Fresno, the biggest adjustments are daily exercise, keeping a heavy coat comfortable through summer, and two big seasonal sheds. Every Husky is different, so judge the dog in front of you.
