Boxers came out of late nineteenth-century Germany, where hunting dogs once used to hold boar and deer were crossed with English Bulldogs. The result is a square, muscular dog with a short shiny coat, usually fawn or brindle, a black mask and a blunt muzzle. They've worked as messenger, guard and police dogs, but today they're mostly family companions.
In Fresno, that mix of athleticism and affection means a Boxer wants a job: a daily walk, a game of fetch at a dog park, some training. Many stay goofy for years and greet everyone with full-body wiggles. Their short faces and thin coats mean they cope poorly with both heat and cold, and some shelter Boxers are mixes, so each dog's size and energy can differ.
