Boxers trace back to late nineteenth-century Germany, where the Bullenbeisser, a hunting dog that held boar and deer, was crossed with English Bulldogs. The result is a square, muscular dog with a short shiny coat in fawn or brindle, a black mask and a broad, blunt muzzle. Boxers have worked as messenger, guard and police dogs, and today they're among America's best-known family breeds.
Many Boxers are clownish and physical, greeting people with wiggles and leaps, and they often stay puppyish for years. In Bakersfield, that means planning daily exercise around the heat, since the short face and thin coat make Boxers sensitive to high temperatures. Reward-based training works best, and supervision matters around small children who could get bowled over. Many Boxers in shelters are mixes, so size and energy can vary from dog to dog.
