The Beauceron is France's largest native herding dog, developed on the plains around Chartres to move and guard big flocks over long distances. Its short, weatherproof coat is black and tan or harlequin, with tan leg markings that earned the nickname red stockings, and it has double dewclaws on each hind leg. Beaucerons also served as messenger and sentry dogs in both world wars.
Most are intelligent, confident and loyal to their family while staying reserved with strangers. They're sensitive to tone and mature slowly, often not settling until around three years old. In Phoenix, that means planning exercise for the cool ends of the day, ongoing socialization, and calm, consistent training. Dogs vary, so a Beauceron's own personality matters more than the breed description.
