The Affenpinscher began as a stable and kitchen ratter in Germany, and its name means "monkey-like terrier," a nod to the bearded, bright-eyed face. Adults weigh about 7 to 12 pounds and stand 9 to 12 inches tall, with a harsh, wiry coat that forms a mane around the head and shoulders. The coat sheds little, though it needs regular combing and an occasional tidy-up.
Many Affenpinschers are confident, curious and comically serious, with more swagger than their size suggests. They tend to be loyal to their people, alert to every sound and sometimes bossy with bigger dogs. In Phoenix, that watchfulness shows up in apartment hallways and on leashed walks, and heat matters more than space for a dog this small. Dogs vary, so each Affenpinscher's personality can differ from the breed's reputation.
