The Shiba Inu is the smallest of Japan's native breeds, once used to flush birds and small game from brushy mountain slopes. It's compact and muscular, with a fox-like face, pricked ears, a curled tail and a plush double coat in red, sesame or black and tan with cream markings. Most adults weigh roughly 16 to 25 pounds.
Shibas are clean, loyal to their families and selective about affection. Strong prey drive and a talent for escaping are the main cautions, and Mesa's desert wildlife, from javelina to rattlesnakes, is one more reason to keep walks leashed. Expect heavy shedding twice a year, and patient, reward-based training, since many Shibas are strong-willed. Dogs vary, so spend time getting to know each one.
