Shepherd is a label rather than a single breed. On listings it usually means a German Shepherd or a German Shepherd mix, but it can also cover Australian, Belgian, Dutch and English Shepherds and crosses with Labs, Huskies and other dogs. What they share is ancestry in herding and flock-guarding work.
Most are medium to large, roughly 45 to 90 pounds, with a thick shedding coat, a quick mind and a strong urge to stay near their people. Many are loyal and watchful, and some are protective with strangers. Because ancestry varies so much, a dog's size, energy and manner tell you more than the label. In Mesa, that mix of stamina and thick coat matters most when the weather turns hot.
