Bernese Mountain Dogs come from the Swiss canton of Bern, where they pulled milk and cheese carts, drove cattle and guarded farmyards. They're the only long-coated Sennenhund, with a black coat, rust markings, a white blaze and a white chest cross, and most weigh 70 to 115 pounds. Many are gentle, affectionate and eager to please, though some are reserved with strangers at first.
Their build was made for Alpine cold, which is why Mesa asks more of an adopter than many places. The thick double coat sheds heavily year-round, and brushing a couple of times a week helps. Lifespans run shorter than average, roughly 7 to 10 years, with cancer a leading concern. Dogs vary, so a Berner's own temperament, health and comfort in warm weather matter more than the breed label.
