The Standard Poodle is the largest of the three Poodle sizes and the one closest to the breed's original job as a water retriever, with roots most often traced to Germany. Adults stand 18 to 24 inches tall and weigh roughly 40 to 70 pounds, with a square, athletic build and a dense, curly coat in solid colors from black and white to apricot and silver.
Standards are bright, sensitive and affectionate, often reserved with strangers and devoted to their own household. Many keep a playful streak well into adulthood. The coat sheds very little but never stops growing, so expect a professional clip every month or two and brushing several times a week. In Gilbert, that routine pairs with daily outdoor time, though dogs of the breed vary in energy and temperament.
