German Shorthaired Pointers were developed in nineteenth-century Germany as all-purpose hunting dogs that could point birds, track wounded game and retrieve from land or water. They're lean, muscular dogs with a short, dense coat in solid liver or liver and white, often ticked or roan, and most weigh 45 to 70 pounds.
Most GSPs are friendly, affectionate and eager to work, and many stay intensely energetic until two or three years old. That energy suits Gilbert's long, flat canal trails and its off-leash parks, as long as someone is home often. A bored GSP may chew, bark, dig or jump fences, so daily exercise and training matter more than the easy short coat. Dogs vary, and an adult's energy is easier to judge than a puppy's.
