Spaniel is a group of dog types, not a single breed. The name traces back to an old word for Spanish, and these dogs were developed to flush game birds from brush and often retrieve them. The group includes Cocker, English Springer, Welsh Springer, Field and Boykin spaniels, along with smaller companions like the Cavalier King Charles. A dog labeled a spaniel at a shelter is often a Cocker or Springer type or mix.
Most are small to medium, roughly 20 to 50 pounds, with long feathered ears and a silky or wavy coat. In Chandler, the coat and the energy both deserve planning, since a thick, feathered spaniel carries more heat than its size suggests and still needs real exercise. Springer-type mixes usually need the most activity, while Cavalier or older Cocker mixes are often content with less.
