The Plott Hound descends from Hanoverian hounds that Johannes Plott brought to the North Carolina mountains around 1750, and the breed later became that state's official dog. Bred to trail and hold bear and wild boar, Plotts are lean, muscular dogs with a short, glossy coat that is usually brindle, though solid black and buckskin also occur. Adults typically weigh 40 to 60 pounds.
At home, many Plotts are mellow and affectionate, but outdoors their nose and prey drive take over. In Chandler, that means leashed walks and a tall, secure fence for any yard, since desert wildlife and backyard critters will tempt a scent hound. Patient, consistent training suits their confident, independent minds, and the short coat needs only weekly brushing. Dogs vary, so each Plott's energy and sociability can differ.
