The Maltese is a toy companion with roots in the Mediterranean, though today's breed was largely standardized in Victorian Britain. Most weigh under eight pounds and wear a long, silky white single coat with no undercoat. It sheds very little, but it mats easily unless brushed often or kept in a short puppy cut, which many pet owners choose.
Many Maltese are gentle, affectionate and surprisingly fearless, and most stay playful well into old age. They like to be near their people and may struggle with long hours alone. Their light frames are easy to injure, so they suit careful adults or calm older children. In Tuscaloosa, plan for regular grooming, daily tooth care and patient housetraining.
