Coonhound is a family of American scent hounds, not a single breed. The Black and Tan, Redbone, Bluetick, Treeing Walker, American English and Plott were built to follow a raccoon's trail at night and bay at the base of the tree until the hunter arrives. Dogs listed as Coonhound are often one of these or a mix, so size runs from about 45 to 100 pounds.
Indoors, many are mellow, sociable and happy on the sofa. Outdoors, the nose takes over, which matters around Tuscaloosa's wooded trails and quiet residential streets. Plan on a leash, a tall solid fence, daily sniffing walks and patient, treat-based training. The short coat is easy to care for, though long ears need regular checks in humid weather.
