Anatolian Shepherds are livestock guardians from the Anatolian plateau of Turkey, where dogs of this type have protected sheep and goats from predators for thousands of years. They live with the flock and decide for themselves when to step in. Adults are big and rangy, often 80 to 150 pounds, with a short to rough coat, a thick undercoat and, most often, a fawn body with a dark mask.
In Tuscaloosa, that history shows up in everyday routines. Anatolians are usually calm, observant and loyal, but many are protective of their territory and wary of strangers, and they mature slowly, often by age two or three. A tall fence, steady socialization and gentle, consistent training matter more than long runs. Dogs vary, but expect a guardian with opinions, not a dog that greets every visitor.
