Developed in the American South from French and English hounds, the Bluetick Coonhound was bred to trail raccoons through the night and hold them in a tree with a loud, ringing bay. Its coat is short, glossy and thickly mottled in black ticking over white, giving the impression of a dark navy blue, often with tan points and red ticking on the legs. Strong, deep-chested and long-eared, it was built for endurance.
At home, many Blueticks are sweet, affectionate dogs that enjoy lounging near their people. Once a scent catches their nose, though, they can become single-minded and deaf to commands, and their voice carries far. Adopters should expect a dog that needs daily exercise, secure fencing, patient training and neighbors who tolerate the occasional howl, in exchange for a loyal, easygoing companion.
