Cattle Dog is a shelter label more than a single breed. Most dogs listed this way are Australian Cattle Dogs, also called Blue or Red Heelers, or mixes with one, though Texas Heelers and crosses with Border Collies or Labs turn up too. The Australian Cattle Dog was developed in nineteenth-century Australia by crossing collie-type herders with dingoes, creating a tough drover that moves cattle by nipping their heels.
Most are medium-sized, muscular and short-coated, around 30 to 50 pounds, with a double coat that sheds moderately. They're loyal, sharp and often wary of strangers, and they like having a task. In Montgomery that means daily exercise and brain work before the heat builds. Mixes vary in size, coat and energy, so spend time with a dog in person before deciding.
