Australian Cattle Dogs, also called Blue Heelers or Queensland Heelers, were developed in nineteenth-century Australia to drive cattle over long distances in heat. That history shows in a compact, muscular dog of roughly 35 to 50 pounds with a weatherproof short double coat in blue or red speckle. In Montgomery's humid summers that tough build is an asset, though it doesn't make the dog immune to heat.
Heelers are loyal, alert and clever, and many bond closely with one person while staying wary of strangers. Strong herding instincts can show up as nipping at heels, chasing bikes or bossing other pets. With training, daily work and a steady routine, many become devoted companions that often live 12 to 16 years. Dogs vary, so each Heeler's own personality matters more than the label.
