Boxers are muscular, square working dogs from Germany, with a short fawn or brindle coat, a dark mask and a blunt muzzle. They descend from hunting mastiff-type dogs and later worked as messengers and guards, which explains the alert, protective streak many show with strangers.
In Mobile, the short coat and short face matter more than the looks. Boxers handle neither Gulf Coast humidity nor the occasional hard freeze well, so they live indoors. Many stay playful for years, so expect daily exercise, patient reward-based training and some enthusiastic jumping. The coat sheds lightly, but wiping paws and bellies after wet walks helps in a city that gets more than 60 inches of rain a year. Many shelter dogs labeled Boxers are mixes, so size and energy vary.
