Golden Retrievers were developed in the Scottish Highlands in the late 1800s to retrieve birds gently over rough ground and cold water. That history shows in the dense, water-repellent double coat, feathered legs and soft expression, and in a love of carrying things to people. Adults usually weigh 55 to 75 pounds.
Many Goldens are warm, patient and eager to please, which is why they work as family companions, therapy dogs and guide dogs. They also mature slowly, often staying bouncy and mouthy for two or three years. In Huntsville, expect to brush often, since the coat sheds heavily, and to plan for the wet months, when a dog that loves puddles and creek banks tracks the outdoors inside. Dogs vary, and a calm adult or senior may suit a quieter household.
