Chihuahuas take their name from the Mexican state of Chihuahua, and the AKC registered its first one in 1904. Most weigh roughly 3 to 9 pounds, with an apple-shaped head, big upright ears and either a smooth or long coat in nearly any color. They often live 12 to 16 years, so adopting one is a long commitment.
Many Chihuahuas are bold, loyal and attached to one or two favorite people, with plenty of opinions for such a small dog. They can be wary of strangers and may snap if handled roughly, so gentle socialization and reward-based training help. In Huntsville, that means a dog who does well in an apartment but needs a plan for summer heat, spring storms and neighborhood wildlife. Every Chihuahua is different, so spend time getting to know the dog.
